Holzer Original Fernet

Herbal. Intricate. Undaunted.

Holzer Original is an Austrian Fernet crafted by Holzer & Holzer — a family bittermaking dynasty now in its fourth generation. Made in the Brunnwald Forest of northern Austria, near the Czech border, this Fernet draws on a recipe revived from the family archive by great-grandson Raphael Holzer in 2016, after the original business closed in the 1980s.

Fifteen botanicals — including arnica montana, orris root, lavender, and angelica — are slow-extracted over two weeks using a traditional percolation method with no oxygen contact, preserving their full aromatic complexity. The result is a Fernet with notes of lavender, citrus, and ginger on the nose, a floral, silky palate with wildflower honey and black tea, and a pleasant, evolving bitterness on the finish. All color comes naturally from the botanical infusion — no barrel aging, no caramel, no additives.

Soft, mineral-rich water drawn from two wells on the Holzer family property (granite bedrock, pH 6.32) underpins the entire production, giving the spirit its signature smoothness.

Best enjoyed: neat, on the rocks, in a Highball, or shaken into cocktails.
